Tamatar (Spiced Indian Tomato Soup)

This classic soup is given an Indian twist ny adding chilies, cumin and cilantro. Serve with Naan for a refreshing start to a meal.

serves 2-4

  • 4-5 medium tomatoes (washed and cut)
  • 2 tsp gram flour (besan)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 4-6 green chilies (to taste)
  • 1 garlic clove cut finely
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • ½ tsp paprica or red chili if you like very hot
  • 1 tsp jaggery or 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • salt to taste
  • 5-7 peppercorns
  • 1 tsp tomato paste (optional)
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander for garnish
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream or half and half
  • 1 tsp butter (optional)
  • 3-4 cups water

How to make Tamatar (Tomato) Soup:

  1. Cut the tomatoes into big pieces. Add 1 cup of water and put to cook. Later you can add some more water.
  2. When cooked, prepare a thick puree by passing through a sieve.
  3. Heat the oil and fry the cumin seeds for a few seconds.
  4. Add green chilies, chopped garlic and ginger and fry again for a few seconds.
  5. Add the tomato purée and salt, black pepper to taste and 2 cups of water. Add butter (optionalI
  6. Cook for a few minutes. Add heavy cream or half and half. SImmer for 1 minute and turn off the gas.
  7. Sprinkle coriander on top and serve hot.
